Top 7 Questions Parents Ask Before Their Family Photo Session
Honest answers from a Houston family photographer
Booking a family photo session is exciting… and also a little nerve-wracking. You want beautiful images, yes, but you also want your kids to feel comfortable, your partner to cooperate, and the whole thing to feel worth the effort.
As a Houston family photographer who has worked with hundreds of families across Houston, Memorial, The Heights, Bellaire, River Oaks, and surrounding areas, I hear the same questions again and again. Not because parents are unsure, but because they care deeply about their experience.
So let’s talk about it. Here are the top questions parents ask me before their Houston family photography session and what you can really expect.
1. “What if my kids do not behave during our family photo session?”
This is the number one concern I hear from parents booking family photos. And here’s the truth: I do not expect perfect behavior. I expect real kids. I'm a mom of three very energetic children so believe me when I say I get it. Wiggles, shy moments, loud laughter, dramatic emotions, and everything in between are completely normal.
My best advice is try your best to come to your session with an attitude of play and fun. The vibe you bring to your session is the vibe your family will follow. And as your photographer, my job is not to control your children. My job is to connect with them. I build trust quickly, keep things moving, and create space for your kids to be themselves. That is where authentic family photos come from.
2. “What should we wear for our Houston family photos?”
Styling matters, but it does not have to be stressful. I always tell my families to start with mom’s outfit first. When you feel confident and comfortable, it sets the tone for the whole session.
For Houston photo sessions, soft neutrals, light layers, and breathable fabrics work beautifully. Think creams, tans, muted greens, soft blues, and textures like linen or denim. I also provide a full family photo styling guide to every client that's full of tips on patterns, colors, textures, layers and more so you never feel stuck.
3. “Will you pose us, or is it more candid?”
My style of Houston family photography is guided but natural. I will never leave you wondering what to do with your hands, but I also will not make you stand stiffly and smile at the camera for an hour.
I use movement, prompts, games and connection to create images that feel real. You will walk, snuggle, laugh, and talk to each other. The posing creates the space. The magic happens in between.
4. “What if my child does not smile in the photos?”
Smiles are wonderful, but they are not necessarily the goal. Emotion is. Some of the most meaningful family photos come from quiet moments, thoughtful expressions, and tender connection. As your Houston family photographer, I never force smiles. I earn them. And when they come naturally, they are so much better.
Haven't convinced you? Here are some example of photos that just developed naturally, not from saying, "everybody smile!"
5. “HOW LONG DOES A FAMILY PHOTO SESSION USUALLY LAST?”
I design my sessions to keep kids engaged without pushing them past their limit. Most Houston family photo sessions last long enough to get a full, beautiful gallery but short enough that no one is over it by the end (usually about an hour and we include some breaks when we need them).
We move. We play. We pause. And we follow your kids’ lead.
6. “WHAT IF I FEEL AWKWARD IN FRONT OF THE CAMERA?”
Everyone feels awkward at first. Truly. Even the most confident people. *Ahem...ever your trusty photographer over here* But once you start interacting with your family instead of thinking about the camera, that feeling fades.
7. “WHAT HAPPENS IF THE WEATHER IS BAD IN HOUSTON?”
Houston weather keeps us humble 😅. I'm a natural light photographer, which means I don't use any extra light source like flashes or light boxes. So if it rains, is very overcast, or conditions are not ideal, we reschedule or adjust. Yes, even if your session is indoors. I always have a plan B so your family photos are never rushed or compromised.
